Where to Go Climbing

  • Otter Cliffs, Being one of the most popular spots for weekend mountaineers, can be very busy.
  • The South Wall of the Precipice and Echo Lake offers routes for all abilities.
  • South Bubble is recommended for beginners and is less crowded than Otter Cliffs.
  • Great Head has a dramatic overhang and hard climb over the ocean recommended for expert climbers.
  • Canada Cliffs does not offer the views but is often less busy.
  • Gorham Mtn offers good boulders as does all the cliffs along Ocean Drive.
  • Champlain Mountain in noted for a 250-foot crack climb called “The Story of O”.

When to Climb

The Precipice proper, Jordan Cliffs, and on occasion other areas are closed from April to August due to peregrine falcon nesting. The best climbing is in good weather during the summer season.

Otter Cliffs, Precipice (along the South Wall) and Canada Cliffs have logbooks in which climbers are required to register.

Hire a Guide

Rock climbing guides are available on Mount Desert Island and it is recommended that you use these services as a beginner or when exploring routes that you are not familiar with. Equipment rentals are also available. Never attempt to climb alone.
