The full-time faculty comes from many different backgrounds including industrial positions in engineering, marine science, maritime management, ship operations, and specializing in small vessel design and operation. Other part time personnel come from various domestic and foreign universities.
Maine has long been known for the skills of the shipbuilders and sea captains located here. Since the Maine Maritime Academy was founded in the 1930s, the institute has continued to grow steadily and currently offers studies in ten undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
